10.2.1.1 How to create a web site

To add a website to a folder, click  Add  |   Web Site  . This will take you to a form, similar to the one for adding a folder, requesting a name for the new website. When you have specified the name of the website and created it, you will see the Website icon beside the name of your new website in your folder. The root address (or location) of your new website, "Publish URL:", is displayed underneath the name. Note that this root is created and published on the live server as soon as the website is created in Business Collaborator (to prevent others from using it while you design and build your site) - see Figure 10.2-1 .

10.2.1.2 Result of creating a web site

When you create a web site, it automatically creates a file called default.htm inside it and publishes it. This ensures that

  • The "live" web site is instantly available - users will not see an error message if they attempt to view the web site
  • It is clear what you should do next in order to implement a meaningful web site

The default.html page can be edited by the web site creator and any colleagues he chooses to invite to the web site. The web site functions as a special kind of folder - it contains documents in the usual way and all the normal operations are available on these documents. In addition, the web site as a whole and any selected documents, may be published.

Note 1
The web site name will be case sensitive if the Business Collaborator server is running on a UNIX machine.
Note 2
The web site will be at the address
http://<yourservername>/<websitename>

If you wish to use Business Collaborator to maintain your corporate web pages, you may choose to purchase the Internet domain www.<yourcompanyname>.com . In this case, you may simply direct this address to the address at which the web pages are located.

10.2.2 Add a web folder

Websites can contain folders and documents just like any other Business Collaborator workspace or shared folder. To add a web folder to a website, click  Add  |   Folder  when inside the website. This will take you to the same form as used for adding a standard folder in Business Collaborator. When you have specified the name of the folder and created it, you will see the standard folder icon, Folder, beside the name of your new web folder - see Figure 10.2-1.

10.2.3 Add a document

Documents are added in an identical way to normal Business Collaborator documents. They are not created ("published") on the live server when they are added - they are initially in their "raw" state. They will only be made publicly available when you choose to publish them.

10.2.4 Events

Events are registered, stored and displayed on websites and their contents in the same way as for other Business Collaborator objects. Similarly, Access Rights can be set on websites and their contents to prevent specified individuals from editing web pages before they are published or only give permission to publish web pages to a limited group of people.
