6.1.1 Downloading documents using Netscape

  1. View - Left click on the document you wish to see. You may be presented with a choice - choose to "Open it". The appropriate application will start up and display the document. (This will open the file in a temporary location on your local disk.)
  2. Download with a view to changing - Right click on the document and select "Save Link As..." then choose where you wish to save the document on your disk. You may then open this document using the relevant application in the usual way.
  3. Note that when you left click on a document, you may be presented with the options to either open the document directly or save it to a specified location on your local disk. The exact behaviour of the browser when it encounters any file format can be modified via - "Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Applications" for Netscape 4. (This is not an issue with Netscape 6).

6.1.2 Downloading documents using Microsoft Internet Explorer

Choose the "Open.." option if you simply wish to read the document. The document will open in the application if it is available. (This will open the file in a temporary location on your local disk.)
  2. Download with a view to changing - Right click on the document and select "Save Target As" then choose where you wish to save the document on your disk. You may then open this document using the relevant application in the usual way.
  3. Note that when you left click on a document, you may be presented with the options to either open the document directly or save it to a specified location on your local disk. The exact behaviour of the browser when it encounters any file format can be modified via "View | Options | File Types" in NT Explorer - note that this is not set via your web browser for Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Note
