6.4 Editing documents online

The only document types which may be edited directly on the server, i.e. without having a suitable application installed on your local computer, are those in formats such as Plain Text or HTML which do not contain implicitly embedded formatting information.

Plain text and html documents may be downloaded, edited on your local computer and then replaced (or revised) in the same way as documents in other formats (see section 3.2 or section 6.3). These methods are appropriate for making significant changes.

However, if you are making minor changes such as typographical errors, it is easier to make changes directly:

  • Click on  |  Online Edit  for the document.
  • On this page (shown in Figure 6.4-1), a text box containing the document will be displayed which you can edit.
  • Click "Update document" to commit your changes or "Clear changes" to revert to the original text.

If you  |  Online Edit  a text document under version control directly on the server, a new version is created automatically. Its version information can be completed or modified subsequently by means of  View/Change  |  Version Info  (on the info page).

If the document is under version control (see section 3.7), editing the document in this way will automatically create a new version of the document but you will not be given the opportunity to enter comments about the changes you have made in the version or update its status.
